Brisk preparations are afoot to welcome the Bengali New Year-1426, popularly known as Pahela Boishakh, on Sunday.
Socio-cultural organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes, including Shobhajatra, discussion, songs, recitation, seminar and food distribution, to celebrate the day to be participated by the people of all strata.
Bangladesh Television and other private television channels will broadcast special programmes, while Baishakhi Mela will be organized at different places of the city.
To welcome the Bengali year, Bangla Academy will start the day with the new-year welcome song at 8am in the morning, at Rabindra Chattar.
Presided over by the Director General of Bangla Academy poet Habibullah Siraji, a welcome speech will be delivered by renowned writer and trusty of the Freedom Fighter Museum, Mafidul Haque. Followed by the inaugural programme, a cultural function will be held.
The National Press Club will greet the New Year with programmes including cultural function and discussion.
The National Museum, unlike others, will celebrate the New Year welcoming programme on 13th April.
Presided over by veteran artist Hashem Khan, state minister of cultural affairs, KM Khalid, MP will inaugurate the Pitha and Handicrafts fair on the Museum premises, at 6pm.
Secretary of the cultural affairs ministry, Dr. M Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal will also be present at the pogramme, as the special guest.
Dhaka Reporters Unity, Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi, Bangladesh Combined Cultural Alliance, Baikuntha Recitation Academy and other cultural organizations of the city have also taken identical programmes to celebrate the Bengali New Year.
