Chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Monirul Islam said the network of militancy in Bangladesh has weakened.

“There is no place for militancy in Bangladesh… Currently they (militants) do not have any active movement in the country as their network has become weak. Moreover, police are alert in dealing with any untoward situation,” he told journalists.

He was addressing a programme titled ‘Meet with Monirul Islam’ at CIRDAP Auditorium in the capital under the arrangement of Crime Reporters’ Association Of Bangladesh (CRAB).

Bangladesh has a strong coordination with other countries across the world to combat terrorism, extremism and militant activities , he said, adding that this coordination will be further strengthened in the days to come.

Terming terrorism as a global problem, he said it cannot be associated with any country, nation or religion.

He said no country, however rich or poor, was free from the threat of terrorism.

Referring to Prime Minister’s zero tolerance policy regarding extremism and terrorism, he said two counter-terrorism tribunals had been formed under the Anti-Terrorism Tribunal for quick disposal of cases.

In response to another question, he said Rohingyas are a big problem for Bangladesh, adding that if they continued to live in the country for a long time then there could be more social problems.

Steps regarding sending Rohingyas to their motherland were being taken at national and international levels, he said.

He said all intelligence agencies in the country have kept them (Rohingyas) under surveillance, adding “There is no scope for them to engage in militancy.”

Monirul also said the recent brutal terrorist attack in Sri Lanka is an unfortunate incident and expressed deep sympathy at the loss of life in the deadly attacks.

Crab President Abul Khayer, General Secretary Dipu Sarwar, DMP Deputy Commissioner (DC) (Media) Masudur Rahman and other senior officials of CRAB and CTTC were present on the occasion.
