Published 9:52 pm | July 30, 2019

Visiting Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono today said his government would do whatever was necessary for the repatriation of displaced Rohingyas and world leaders should also stand by Bangladesh to this end.

“The Rohingya refugee, sheltered earlier, is now a huge burden for Bangladesh . . . And this problem can be resolved only by sending them to their ancestral homeland in a dignified manner,” he said after visiting the Rohingya camp in Kutupalong this afternoon.

“The help and support of his government for the Rohingyas will remain uninterrupted,” the Japanese minister added.

Taro Kono, who arrived here last night on a three-day visit, reached the Rohingya Camp around noon.

During the visit, the Japanese minister exchanged views with officers and employees in-charge of the Rohingya camps and gave a patient hearing to Rohingya problems and demands.

Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner additional secretary Md Abul Kalam, Cox’s Bazar office chief of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Marin Din and senior officials of the foreign ministry accompanied the visiting Japanese foreign minister.
