Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said BNP and its chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia had turned Bangladesh into a sanctuary of militants.

“Islam is a religion of peace which never allows killing people. Bangla Bhai and Shaykah Abur Rahman had cropped up during the era of BNP-Jamaat,” he told a rally at the city’s Nattamancha.

Bangladesh United Islamic Party arranged the anti-militancy rally.

Speaking as the chief guest, Hasan said militants carried out bomb attacks in 500 places across the country at a time and on different court premises during the regime of BNP-Jamaat.

The 21 August grenade attack was carried out at an Awami League rally in the capital, sponsored by the BNP-Jamaat government, he added.

On the other hand, the information minister said, the Awami League has taken ‘zero tolerance’ policy against militancy.

“Although militancy could not be eliminated completely from this soil, the Awami League government combated it in an iron hand. If Islamic parties raise voice against militancy and BNP stops patronization of militancy, it would be possible to eliminate this social menace,” he said.

Hasan, also Awami League publicity and publication secretary, said Awami League and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did many works for Islam and no party did such works in the past.

Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman established Islamic Foundation, while AL government fulfilled the 100-year-old demand of Qawmi madrasha students, he said.

The AL leader said mosque-based Maqtabs have been introduced and the construction work of mosques, financed by the government, in every district continues.

Chaired by Bangladesh United Islamic Party chairman Mowlana Ismail Hossain, the rally was addressed, by Dhaka City South AL general secretary Shahe Alam Murad, senior journalist Iqbal Sobhan Chowdury and Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists secretary general Shaban Mahmood.

Earlier today, the minister joined a function at Dainik Samakal office here.
