A Chattogram Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal today awarded death penalty to nine people and four accused were
given life term imprisonment for murdering a trader Jahangir Alam Sirkar of Doudkandi under Cumilla district. Three people were acquitted from the murder charge as allegation brought against them was not proved.
Acting Judge of the Speedy Tribunal Mohammad Abdul Halim pronounced the verdict after examining records and witnesses depositions. Public Prosecutor of the Tribunal and General Secretary of Chattogram District Bar Association Mohammad Ayub Khan told BSS that the convicts, who were sentenced to capital punishment, are Sajib, Rajib, Harun, Shaon, Amin, Rabu, Momin, Abu Taher and Mohsin.
Besides, the court convicted four accused named Matin, Shah Paran, Shamim and Khokan Mia with life term imprisonment. Three others charge sheeted accused Nayan, Moslem Mia and Billal were freed without any charge.
The case was transferred from Cumilla judge court to Divisional tribunal in
2015. The tribunal also fined them Taka one lakh each for the same crime in
default to suffer more two years imprisonment.
The prosecution story in brief is that Jahangir Alam, a trader of Doudkandi
was chopped to death by the accused on December 1, 2013 over previous enmity.
Victim’s father Fazal Ali filed a case against 15 persons with Doudkandi
thana in this connection.
Police submitted charge sheet against the 16 accused on March 16 in 2014. After examining 13 prosecution witnesses out of 22, the court awarded the judgement convicting the 13 persons. Nine convicts are in jail while the verdict was pronounced, court sources said.
