3 die, 30 missing as boat capsize in Jamuna river

Online Desk ; Three people, including a child, drowned and minimum 30 went missing as a boat sank in the river Jamuna at Enayetpur area in Sirajganj district on Tuesday.
Of the three drowned, two were identified as Pashan Ali, 65, of Belkuchi upazila, and Sheikh Kamal,of Nagarpur upazila in Tangail district

Identity of the three-year-old child could not be known immediately and parents of the child were among the missing people.

Enayetpur Police Station officer-in-charge Mollah Masud said the boat sank near Sthalchar area in the afternoon on the way to Chauhali upazila with 80-90 passengers on board. About 35-40 people of the boat were managed to swim ashore, he added. All of them are now at Sthalchar Bazar.

Later, the bodies of two men and a child were recovered from the river. Most of the passengers were the workers of paddy harvesting, added the OC.

Members of Fire Service and police were working to rescue the missing people.

Sthal UP chairman Abdun Noor said the engine boat sank at Sthal area at about 2.00pm due to the high waves of the river. The boatman Ibrahim Hossain was managed to swim ashore but 30 men and women went missing, he said.

Shahjadpur Fire Service and Civil Defense Station officer Manjurul Alam said they began their rescue mission. A diver team from Rajshahi is on the way to join the rescue mission, he added.
