online desk : More than two lakh people have been affected by flood in Sirajganj district as the water levels in the river Jamuna continue to rise because of heavy rainfall and onrush of water from upstream hilly areas in the neighbouring Indian states of Assam and Meghalaya.
Water development Board deputy divisional engineer AKM Rafiqul Islam said water levels in the river Jamuna has increased 30cm in last 24-hour. The river was flowing 102cm and 123cm above the danger levels at Sirajganj and Kazipur points respectively at 3.00pm on Friday.
A total of 224 villages under Sadar, Kazipur, Belkuchi, Chouhali, Shahjadpur and Ullapara upazilas have been inundated afresh. Flood-hit people have taken shelter on high lands and embankment areas for their safety. Marooned people are suffering for cooked foods and pure water as well as lack of sanitation.
Flood affected people blame the local administration for not providing them with cooked food and other essentials though the authorities concerned say that they make lists of flood-hit people to provide them assistance.
Abdul Hamid, Farida Begum and Latifa Begum at village Simla under Sadar upazila alleged that they have taken shelter on embankment areas about two weeks but not received any relief yet.
Department of Public Health Engineering executive engineer Tabibur Rahman said they have taken all-out preparations to deal with aftermath of the flood. “We distributed 12,000 water purification tablets and set up 12 tubewells and 35 temporary toilets,” he added.
The district Relief and Rehabilitation officer Abdur Rahim said there is no shortage of relief. “We are making list of flood-hit people and will hand over relief items among them as per the lists,” he added.
