Online Desk : Sixteen staff of Baharchhara Police Investigation Centre including in-charge Inspector Liakat have been withdrawn in connection with the killing of retired Bangladesh Army Major Sinha Md Rashed in police firing at Shamlapur police checkpost in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar.
They also include a sub-inspector, an assistant sub-inspector and 13 constables.
They were withdrawn following an order issued by Inspector General of Police Dr Benazir Ahmed on Sunday (August 2). The IGP also ordered to attach them to the Cox’s Bazar District Police Lines.
A three-member inquiry committee has already been formed to probe the incident of killing of the Bangladesh Army Major.
It may be mentioned that at about 10:00pm on Friday (August 31), there was an altercation when the Cox’s Bazar-bound private car carrying Bangladesh Army’s retired Major reached Baharchhara Shaplapur Police Investigation Centre along the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive Road.
Witnesses said Inspector Liakat asked Major (Retd) Sinha to raise his hands above. Raising the hands, Major (Retd) Sinha told them, “Please, you inquire about me instead of being excited.”
But, in-charge of the police investigation centre Inspector Liakat Ali shot at Major (Retd) Sinha shouting at him “son of a bitch” instead of paying any heed to his request.
Cox’s Bazar police super claimed that Major (Retd) Sinha had aimed his pistol at police during the incident. “Because of it, Inspector Liakat fired shots at him for self-defence,” he said.
On the other hand, Zakir Hossain, Additional DIG (Operations and Crimes), Chittagong Range of police, has been staying in Chittagong to know the details about the incident.
It is learnt that Major (Retd) Sinha Rashed Khan had been staying at ‘Nilima Rest House’ in Himchhari along with four other students over the last one month to make a documentary film for his travel-based YouTube channel “Just Go.”. They went to the Ward No. 7 areas at Baharchhara union to see a mountain for video. When they were watching the mountain using their torches, local people informed police suspecting them as dacoits. In such a situation, Major Sinha and Sifat came down from the mountain and were heading toward their resort by their private car. On their way, they were intercepted by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members at a checkpost. When they introduced them to the BGB members, they were allowed to leave. But, when they reached at the Shamlapur Police Checkpost, there was an altercation. At one stage, Inspector Liakt appeared at the place and shot at Major (Retd) Sinha shouting “son of a bitch” at him.
