Nuruzzaman Biswas gets AL nomination for Pabna-4 by-polls

Online Desk : Ruling Awami League has announced the name of party-nominated candidate for Pabna-4 (Ishwardi-Atgharia) by-election.
Instead of giving nomination to any of the six family members of former Land Minister and lawmaker Shamsur Rahman Sheriff Dilu, the party has surprisingly nominated Ishwardi upazila parishad chairman and Pabna district Awami League vice-president Nuruzzaman Biswas for contesting the Pabna-4 by-election with the symbol of ‘Boat’ on September 26 next.

His candidature was decided at a meeting of the party’s parliamentary board held at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official residence Ganabhaban in the capital on Sunday afternoon.

Barrister Biplab Barua, office secretary of Awami League, confirmed the matter to media on Sunday evening.

He said the Awami League parliamentary board decided to give Nuruzzaman the nomination during a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair at Ganabhaban.

The by-polls to Pabna 4 seat is scheduled to be held on September 26.

As per the Election Commission’s schedule, the last date for submitting the nomination papers is September 2, the date for scrutinising nomination papers is September 3, and the last date for the withdrawal of nomination papers is September 8.

The Pabna 4 seat fell vacant following the deaths of former Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sherif MP on April 2, but the Election Commission could not arrange the by-polls as per the constitutional requirement of within 180 days due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Dilu was elected member of parliament from the constituency for five consecutive terms since 1996.

A total of 28 leaders sought nomination from the Pabna-4 constituency. Among them, six were the Dilu’s family members. In order to get nomination, Dilu’s wife and Ishwardi Upazila Mohila Awami League president Qamrunnahar Sheriff, eldest son Ishwardi upazila Awami League member Galibur Rahman Sheriff, eldest daughter district Awami League Women Affairs secretary Mahjabin Shirin Pia, Shirin’s husband Ishwardi Municipal AL president and Ishwardi Pourasava Mayor Abul Kalam Azad Mintu, Dilu’s maternal cousin and District AL joint secretary Bashir Ahmed Bakul and husband of the niece and Supreme Court lawyer Habibur Rahman tried separately.
