2709 birds of 41 species found at Padma river in waterbird census

Online desk ; A total of 2,709 birds of 41 different species have been found at charlands areas of the river Padma.The highest number of the counted birds is Gadwall species of 577, while among others, rare sightings Black Stork and Falcated Duck were also seen.

The birds were counted on Monday on first day of waterbird census, which is jointly being conducted by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Linnaeus University Wildbird Monitoring Programme of Sweden.

IUCN Bangladesh senior programme officer Sarwar Alam Dipu said the week-long census started on Monday at an area of 39 kilometers from Char Khanpur to Majher Char in the river areas and will continue to other water bodies across the country.

A 4,025 birds of 37 species were counted in the Padma River areas last year, said Sarwar, commenting that though the species of birds increased comparing to last year, the total count decreased.
