Five persons were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment each on charge of their involvement in killing a driver through torching his Covered van by hurling petrol bomb at Kansat area under Shibgonj Upazila of Chapainawabganj district.
Rajshahi Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Anup Kumar found the
convicts guilty of the charge and pronounced the verdict in presence of them
in the court on Thursday afternoon.
The convicts are: Tofayel Hossain, Ferdous Ahmed, Mamun Hossain, Abu Bakkar
and Sayem Ali. They were also fined Taka 10,000 each, in default, to suffer
one year more behind the bar.
Under another section of the case, they were jailed for ten more years each
and fined Taka 5,000 in default to suffer one year more in jail.
Forty-nine other accused of the case were acquitted as the charge brought
against them could not be proved beyond doubt. All of them are workers of
BNP-Jamaat.
The prosecution story, in brief, is that the BNP-Jamaat activists hurled
petrol bombs to a covered van bound for Sonamasjid Land Port at Koilabari
Bazar killing its driver Shipon Hossain, 30, on the spot during their anti-
government nationwide strike on March 3, 2015.
Abdul Mannan, elder brother of the victim, had lodged a murder case with
Shibgonj Police Station on the same day.
Upon completion of the investigation police pressed charges accusing 54
persons on April 24, 2016.
After examining the recorded depositions of 29 prosecution witnesses and
other relevant evidences the tribunal handed down the aforesaid verdict.
Special Public Prosecutor Entajul Haque Babu conducted the case on behalf of the state while Advocate Mijanur Rahman defended the accused.
