A field day on the harvest of hybrid sweet gourd was held at Chinirpotol char under Shaghata upazila in the
district on Friday with a call to disseminate the farming of the variety to other chars people.
On Farm Research Division of BARI (Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute), Gaibandha office arranged the function under the project of Strengthening of Horticulture Research and Dissemination of Horticulture and Field Crops in Char Land funded by government of Bangladesh.
Project director (PD) Dr Mohammad Abu Taher Masud addressed the function
as the chief guest while general secretary of Gaibandha Press Club Sarker M
Shahiduzzaman was present at the event as special guest.
With senior scientific officer Dr Abdullah Al Mahmud in the chair, the
function was addressed, among others, by scientific officers Dr Jahangir Alam
and Eakramul Haque and farmer Akbar Ali.
The speakers underscored the need for expansion of BARI hybrid sweet gourd
farming to other char people of the district to get desired output and earn
economical benefit against the crop to change their socio-economic
conditions.
PD Dr Masud described the nutrition qualities of the variety elaborately
and urged the farmers to farm it on their char land at larger scale from the
next seasons.
Earlier, the PD formally inaugurated the harvest of the variety on the land of one farmer Akbar Ali and the other farmers, attended at the event, expressed their willing to cultivate it on their land in the coming season.
A large number of farmers, officials and employees including media men participated in the function spontaneously.
