Deputy Leader of the Opposition GM Quader today said Jatiya Party is playing the active role of the opposition in the 11th Jatiya Sangsad.
“We’ve taken an effort to play the active role of the opposition in the House to make the government accountable as there is no way to make parliament active,” he said.
Taking part in the discussion on the thanksgiving motion on the President address delivered in the House on January 30, Quader said President M Abdul Hamid in his speech focused on the higher economic growth of the country.
President Hamid in his 158-pages address also focused the development of the various sectors which was achieved under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the last ten years.
Referring to an allegation of ‘artificial parliament’, the deputy leader of the opposition said as per the article 70 of the country’s Constitution, the majority party will dominate parliament while the opposition has no scope to implement any decision. “That’s why our activities in parliament are not a making game at all,” he added.
Quader said the Jatiya Party was in power for a long time and it also played the opposition’s role. “Jatiya Party has an independent symbol…why the party would not play the role of opposition party in the parliament?” he questioned.
About the enactment of the ICT act, GM Quader said although the government has enacted the digital ICT act to curb yellow journalism, the ICT act is reportedly causes harassment to journalists.
About the recent Chawkbazar fire, he said recommendations were made in the past to check manmade disasters in urban areas, but the recommendations are yet to be implemented. “Now we observe that the prime minister is looking into the issue,” he said.
The deputy leader of the opposition stressed increasing flights of Biman Bangladesh Airlines on domestic routes to cut the pressure of passengers on road transportation and railway.
About environmental pollution, he said people want a city, which is free from pollution, but city dwellers are inhaling extremely polluted air in Dhaka, suggesting the government to take effective steps to check air pollution here.
