A workshop here today laid importance on cultivation of palm tree and Golpata in a large scale across the country to build up natural shield against thunderbolt and cyclone.
Mangrove silviculture Department and Bangladesh Forest Research Institute (BFRI) arranged the workshop at Batiyaghata Upazila Parishad auditorium here today.
Speakers said the government has taken a plan for massive plantation of palm trees and Golpata. Palm tree is a great protection against lightening, they said adding that saplings of three palm tree should be planted to replace existing one.
They laid importance on planned procurement of palm seeds for their plantation.
Highlighting the prospects of Golpata in Bangladesh, they said the economically profitable mangrove plant can be cultivated everywhere in Bangladesh.

People should not be dependent only on Sundarbans for producing Golpata as this plant can be cultivated around homes, low laying areas, banks of the rivers and canals and in any water body, they said.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ahmed Ziaur Rahman presided over the meeting while resource officer of Khulna Mangrove Silviculture Akramul Islam and Upazila agriculture officer Rabiul Islam spoke on the occasion.
Divisional Officer of Khulna Mangrove Cilviculture Department Dr ASM Helal Siddiqui attended the workshop as trainer in which a total of 40 local farmers took part.
