The High Court (HC) today ordered to remove the word ‘Kumari’ meaning virgin from Muslim marriage document nikahnama. The court ordered to write unmarried instead of the word Kumari and also ordered to add married, widower or divorced for bridegroom.
A High Court division bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Khizir Ahmed Choudhury came up with the order, disposing of a rule issued in this regard.
“Kumari is not the appropriate word for this. The court has ordered to remove this for bride and to add words married, widower or divorced for bridegroom,” said ZI Khan Panna, who moved a writ petition filed in this regard. Deputy attorney general Amit Talukder appeared for the state during the hearing.
