Tejgaon Industrial police recovered the bodies at about 2:30pm.
The murdered sisters were Yasmin Akter, 30, and her younger sister Shimu Akter, 16. They hailed from Narsingdi district.
Police arrested Yasmin’s former husband rickshawpuller Rony Mia, 30, from the house. He hailed from Jamalpur district.
After visiting the spot, police officials said people at the area saw Rony was hacking his wife with a ‘dao’ inside a room on the second floor of house number 253/3 at East Nakhalpara at about 1:15pm. Then the onlookers went there, but Rony shut the door from inside. The onlookers entered the room breaking the doors and found that the bodies of two women were lying on the floor.
Family sources said though Rony was a rickshawpuller, he didn’t do any work most of the time. Apart from gambling, he used to take drugs which led to family feud. Despite repeated requests, Rony declined to quit gambling and drug taking. Finding no other way, Yasmin divorced him four months ago. It made Rony furious. On January 1, Yasmin and Shimu rented a room on the second floor of house number 253/3 East Nakhalpara. Rony-Yasmin couple’s have two daughters. Their three-year-old daughter lives with Yasmin’s mother in Narsingdi, while elder daughter Class VI student Rokhsana lived with her mother in Dhaka.
Rokhsana said her father often used to beat her mother before their divorce. He used to play gambling and taking drugs. Because of it, her mother divorced her father.
Police said Yasmin’s divorced husband Rony hacked his wife to death first and then strangled her sister. Rony got divorce from Yasmin four months ago. The incident happened in sequel to family feud.
Tejgaon Industrial Zone of Police ADC Hafiz Al Faruque said Rony Mia in being questioned under police custody. He confessed killing the two sisters. The bodies were sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for postmortem.
Tejgaon Industrial Police Station duty officer SI Sudarshan said the victims’ bodies were recovered from their bedroom around 2:30pm.
The detained man is a rickshawpuller by profession. He confessed killing the two sisters. Slain Yasmin was a garment worker, while Shimu joined a company at Nabisco area recently.
