The arrested persons included three FIR-listed accused and one suspected accused. Six accused have been arrested so far in connection with the murder case.
The accused were brought at Sirajganj Sadar Police Station early Saturday afternoon. At that time, Sirajganj Sadar Circle’s additional police super Snigdha Akter said the three FIR-listed accused were arrested conducting raid at Khilgaon Police Station area in Dhaka on Friday night with the help of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
On the other hand, another suspect was arrested from Ullapara upazila.
Snigdha Akter said accused Zahidul Islam was arrested on Thursday night for his direct involvement in councillor Tariqul murder. Based on information provided by him, four more accused were arrested from Dhaka and Ullapara on Friday night.
The arrested persons were Enamul Hasan Likhon, 35, son of late Anwar Hossain of Shahednagar Beparipara in Sirajgnaj Sadar municipality, his brother Advocate Sanwar Hossain Ratan, 45, Golam Mostofa alias Mostofa Kamal, 60, and Saiful Islam, 40, son of Mahtab Ali of village Lahiri Mohonpur under Ullapara upazila.
It is learnt that Tariqul Islam Khan was elected unofficially by 85 votes as councillor at Ward No. 6 in Sirajganj Municipal election on January 16 last. Following the announcement of result, he succumbed to a local hospital being stabbed by his rivals. On the following day, slain Tariqul Islam’s son Ekramul Hasan Ridoy filed a murder case with Sirajganj Sadar Police Station naming 32 persons including the defeated candidate and Ward No. 6 Awami League general secretary Shahadat Hossain Buddin and 40 to 50 other unidentified accused. Swapan Bepari, the number 27 accused, was arrested on that day. After four days into filing the case, Zahidul Islam, who allegedly took part in the murder directly, was arrested from Jatrabari in Dhaka, while four more accused were arrested from Dhaka’s Khilgaon and Ullapara in Sirajganj on Friday night.
