Online Desk : Independent candidate Syed Rafiqul Islam (Rebel-AL candidate) has unofficially been elected mayor of Gouripur Pourasava in Mymensingh district under the third phase of municipal ellections on Saturday.
He contested the election with ‘Cocoanut’ symbol and defeated his nearest rival AL-backed Md Shafiqul Islam Hobi of ‘Boat’ symbol.
In the Gouripur Pourasava election, Syed Rafiqul Islam got 7,878 votes, while AL-backed Md Shafiqul Islam Hobi bagged 7,266 votes, BNP-nominated Ataur Rahman Ata received 1,032 votes, and NAP backed Abu Sayeed Faruquzzaman received 79 votes.
The election was held peacefully except one or two stray incidents. Two camerapersons of NTV and Ekattor TV were injured while taking videos of an incident of chase and counter-chase.
